Tome has shut down. Where does your reading life go?
Tome closed on 29 May 2026, taking the posts, the memes and the reading history with it for anyone who had not downloaded them. Months on, most people have landed somewhere. If you have not, or if the place you landed is not sticking, this is the honest version.
First, check what you saved
Tome had a Download your Data tool in profile settings that emailed you a zip: your posts and media, plus a separate CSV of your reading history. That tool went offline with the app on 29 May 2026.
If you have that zip, the CSV is the only copy of your reading history that exists. Put it somewhere you will find it again before you do anything else.
If you did not download it, it is gone, and no app can recover it. That is worth knowing rather than hoping. The good news is that most Tome users were not tracking only on Tome, so a Goodreads or StoryGraph export you already have may cover most of the same books.
What to look for in the next one
Whether you can get your data back out. Tome is the second book app to close in a year. An app you cannot export from is an app that can take your history with it, and that is now the first question, not the last.
Whether the social part is the product or a feature. Tome was expensive to run because memes, GIFs and video are expensive to serve, and it closed with around a hundred thousand users. A reading app that is mostly a feed has to solve that same bill eventually.
Whether spoilers are handled by someone actually checking where you are, rather than a setting you remember to turn on.
Where Voluta fits, and where it does not
Voluta reads the Tome export. Upload the reading history CSV from that zip and it will pull out your books, your ratings and the dates. One honest caveat: Tome closed before anyone published its file format, so the reader was built to recognise the column names such a file would plausibly use rather than ones anybody has confirmed. If it cannot read yours it will tell you exactly which columns it found instead of failing quietly, and that message is worth sending us, because it is how the reader gets fixed for the next person.
What Voluta does have is the part Tome people usually miss: book clubs and buddy reads where discussion is gated by how far each person actually is, so nobody has to write "spoilers ahead" and hope. Quarter-star ratings, because 3.75 is sometimes the truest answer. A monthly and yearly Rewind of what you finished.
It also tracks films, TV and games on the same lists. If you came to Tome for the romantasy corner and left with a watchlist somewhere else and a backlog somewhere else again, that is the part worth trying.
It is a small independent app, not a venture-funded feed, which is the honest reason it does not have Tome's scale of memes and video. That is also the reason the bill that closed Tome is not the bill Voluta has to pay.

Tracking books, films, TV and games is free, along with lists, search, clubs, buddy reads, imports and the annual Rewind. Premium is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year and adds deeper analytics, the monthly Rewind, custom themes and supporter perks.
Questions
- What does the Tome import actually bring across?
- One entry per book, with the rating and the most recent date the file has for it. Tome exported reading updates, so a book you posted about ten times is ten rows, and those collapse into one. Rows without an author are skipped, because Tome carried no ISBN and a title on its own matches the wrong book often enough to matter.
- Can I still get my Tome data?
- No. Tome and its Download your Data tool both went offline on 29 May 2026. If you saved the zip you have a CSV of your reading history; if not, it is gone.
- Can Voluta import a Tome export?
- Yes, and for free. Upload the reading history CSV from your export zip. Because Tome closed before its format was documented, the reader matches on the column names such a file would plausibly use; if yours is shaped differently it reports the columns it found rather than importing nothing. Goodreads, StoryGraph, Kindle and Letterboxd import too, and Trakt and Steam connect.
- Does Voluta do book clubs like Tome did?

- What did Tome recommend instead?
- Tome pointed people at Pagebound, Fable and Reading Rhythms in its farewell post. Those are reasonable if books alone are what you want. Voluta is worth a look if you also track films, TV or games.
